What’s Gravure Printing and What’s its Difference from Digital Printing?

If you want to understand what gravure printing is and how it’s different from digital printing, welcome to this blog!

First of all, we have to know what both of them are. This way, we will know their advantages and disadvantages.

What are gravure printing and digital printing?

The rotogravure printing process, also known as gravure printing, is a printing method that consists of engraving an image on the material that will be used for the end result.

Therefore, instead of using the standard procedures that toner uses, gravure printing engraves an image into a printing cylinder that is filled with ink, which subsequently transfers to the paper.

On the contrary, digital printing does not use printing plates or cylinders like rotogravure does. Instead, it uses toner or liquid ink for printing. This is a special asset for organizations that need to print specific pieces, each with a different code or number.

In this case, digital printing is usually the best way to go – it is also one of the best choices if you don’t have so many things to print.

Gravure printing vs. Digital printing.

Within digital printing, there are also various categories. The two most used are inkjet and xerography. In this this case, the printed image is created by small drops of ink that fall down from the printing machine’s nozzles onto the material.

However, on the latter, the image is formed by putting together different particles (also known as toner) that are attracted to the material that’s being printed on.

While inkjet printing is the usual choice for billboards, paper, plastic, and other materials (including canvas and floor tiles), toner is usually saved for books, brochures, etc.

However, there are many other cases where the volume of printing is too big, or you need to print in specific materials like a pouch or a film-roll. If this is your case, then rotogravure is the best choice for you. By choosing this method, you can customize the materials where you want to print.

At the same time, there are many specific colors of ink available for you to use if you go for gravure printing, for example, Pantone. Although this method is not as used as it previously was, it’s still the best choice in the market for magazines, newspapers, and other high-volume works.

Another important advantage that the gravure printing has over the digital printing is the relationship between cost and product. In the first case, the more you print, the cheaper the cost will be. Therefore, you have the possibility to print large quantities at a lower price.

Final thoughts.

Due to the current technologic advances that the world is going through, the printing process has developed so much that now we have different types of procedures that we can choose depending on what we need to print.

Although gravure printing is not used so much as it was previously, it is still a very relevant way to print, especially if used for magazines and newspapers, due to the many advantages that it offers for that market. It’s different from digital printing, so if you know what you need, make sure that you print it the right way.
