The report found that smartphones are now in the hands of about 31 percent of the U.S. population, growing from only 23 percent in the year-ago period. Of those phones purchased in the fourth-quarter, nearly two-thirds cost $150 or less, and many more were bought for even less. “Although we are seeing more expensive models among the best-selling handsets, carriers are now offering some popular smartphones for less than $100,” said Ross Rubin, NPD’s executive director.

As penetration rises, Rubin cautions that it will take much more than the price of the handset to keep adoption rates high. Rather other factors, he said, such as the price of data plan will become the biggest hurdle.

We’ve been hearing about it for months; now Spring Design is taking orders for the Alex e-reader, the one that’s the basis of its lawsuit against Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS). Spring claims B&N lifted some of the Alex’s elements after meetings between the two. Whether it gets anywhere with the lawsuit, the company will have a hard time getting traction in an increasingly busy e-reader market complicated by the much-hyped iPad and other tablets.

But dual-screen Alex, which lists for $399, has some interesting features that may help with people looking for an e-reader plus: the main 6-inch screen is an E Ink display for reading but the 3.5-inch full-color LCD below is Android-based with multimedia web browsing and downloads over WiFi. Content can be moved between the two screens. The LCD also works as a navigator for the e-books. There’s an emphasis on Interactive e-books with Spring Design LinkNotes to encourage embedded links in text that go to the web or to content stored on the device. The company says it will ship “no later than mid-April.”

Not too surprisingly, Alex isn’t one of the e-readers using the BN eBookstore. Instead it relies on Google’s public domain books and supports Adobe (NSDQ: ADBE) DRM along with Epub, PDF, HTML and text. Spring says the device is also being produced in multi-language versions outside the U.S., including Chinese, Spanish, Russian, Korean and Hebrew.

Why Microsoft would choose a two-pronged mobile approach is not clear at this time, but perhaps it feels two platforms is necessary in order to satisfy the various different user bases in the market. Unfortunately, unless it’s done right, it will likely cause confusion and more fragmentation in the space.

Things should become more clear in the upcoming months, perhaps as soon as the end of March when the industry will gather in Las Vegas at CTIA.

For now, Gizmodo has some unconfirmed details about Project Pink (and more here):

—It looks like a Palm Pre.
—Verizon is a launch partner, but may not be the only launch partner.
—The phones aren’t running Windows Phone 7, unless it’s really hidden.
—It’s all about social networking.
—It has apps, which are likely not compatible with Windows Phone 7, so that leaves the door open to another SDK, or maybe suggests that it will be a closed app environment.

Regardless of how Project Pink turns out, it’s encouraging to see Microsoft moving quickly in mobile after taking a hiatus for the past year. At Microsoft’s financial meeting in July 2009, it said it was committed to mobile, and was ear-marking $1 billion in operating expenses for the division. For perspective, that that’s about a quarter of what it spends on PCs, and about half as much as it spends on search and advertising. In a statement, regarding its investments in mobile, a Microsoft spokesperson told us: “Mobility is one of Microsoft’s top investment areas and we are 100% committed to Windows Phones – now and in the future.”

With Apple’s iPad not shipping for another three weeks or so, and the 3G version more than a month out, it’s hard to know how well the tablet will sell, or how people will use it.

Despite the unknown, AT&T (NYSE: T), which is the exclusive carrier for both the iPhone and iPad in the U.S., has come out and said they don’t believe it will drive a lot of subscriptions on its network. “It will be interesting to see customer reaction to the iPad,” AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said at a Morgan Stanley event on Tuesday. “My expectation is that there’s not going to be a lot of people out there looking for another subscription. We think it’s going to be a largely WiFi-driven product.”

If that’s the case, it will be of some relief to current AT&T subscribers that the iPad will likely not congest AT&T’s network further—although we all know, AT&T’s underestimated data usage once before.

So will the network be overwhelmed once again? If Stephenson is right, it’s unlikely. In fact, the price points and device’s presumed use case almost rules it out.

The most expensive model comes in at $829 for 64 gigabytes and 3G access, but the lowest-end model costs only $499 for 16 gigabytes and WiFi only. In all cases, the 3G model makes the iPad more of a commitment. Data plans start at $15 a month for 250 megabytes and unlimited access costs $30. While that’s half as much as what carriers typically charge for a laptop, Stephenson is right: how many people will be willing to pay that on top of what they already pay for the cellular data connection?

Not to mention, the use case of the device is not exactly mobile. Portable, yes, but not mobile. The 9.7 inch display does not fit into your back pocket or even very easily in a medium-sized purse. It’s doubtful people will bring it into the car to stream music through the radio, or use Google (NSDQ: GOOG) maps while on the road, or bring it to the ballpark to look up a player’s stats during the game.

However, there’s a couple of exceptions for this: A a child in the backseat of a car with two free hands could easily gobble up data by streaming TV, or surfing the internet. And, potentially some consumers will choose the iPad as a laptop substitution in the home. At the starting price of $630 with 3G and $30 a month for access, it becomes a competitive package to buying a laptop and signing up for cable or DSL. In urban areas, multiple iPad users could definitely bring the network to a crawl.

At the Morgan Stanley event yesterday, Stephenson also addressed rumors that AT&T’s exclusive hold on the iPhone was ending soon. He said that he expects the smartphone to be an important part of its line-up for “quite some time,” according to Dow Jones Newswires. Analysts most recently guessed there’s a good chance that AT&T will keep its exclusivity through 2010. Stephenson was not any more specific, but many believe that Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) and AT&T are content given AT&T’s new iPad exclusivity.

While no one wants to wake up to the news that Apple—one of the most successful consumer brands—has filed a lawsuit against you, in this case, little-known HTC must have celebrated just a tiny bit.

In 13 years, the Taiwanese has grown to more than 9,000 employees worldwide, including 3,000 engineers and 125 employees in North America. Last year, it hit its stride by releasing some of the flashiest non-iPhone devices on the market, like the Hero, the T-Mobile myTouch and the HD 2. That’s a far cry from the first iPaq personal computer it built for Compaq 10 years ago. Now HTC is in the company of Nokia (NYSE: NOK), which has also exchanged patent disputes with Apple (NSDQ: AAPL).

While the lawsuit may represent some well-deserved recognition, it will also present significant distractions for the small company and increase legal scrutiny it potentially wasn’t prepared for. “Yes, HTC is a significant player in the industry, but it’s a contract manufacturer,” says RBC analyst Mike Abramsky. “I’m not sure it has a big enough patent base with which to defend itself. It’s more vulnerable,” reports AllThingsD.

How immediate of an impact the lawsuit could have on HTC is not clear. Since the suit was filed both with the United States District Court in Delaware and the United States International Trade Commission, Apple could ask the commission to halt shipments of infringing HTC phones that are coming into the U.S.

HTC issued a short statement yesterday saying that it did not believe the lawsuit posed a short-term material impact to its business, or would affect Q1 guidance. It said: “HTC is a mobile technology innovator and patent holder that has been very focused over the past 13 years on creating many of the most innovative smartphones. HTC Corporation values U.S. and international patent rights and will work with in the U.S. Judicial System to protect its own innovations and rights.”

For perspective, here’s how HTC is David and Apple is Goliath:

—Manpower: In this lawsuit, Apple may, in part, be targeting the technical expertise of a small design office in Seattle’s historic Pioneer Square neighborhood, where about 25 people have cooked up their own user interface called Sense. The user interface overlays on top of both the Windows Mobile and Google (NSDQ: GOOG) Android handsets that it builds.

—Market share: According to IDC, HTC had a 4.6 percent global share of the smartphone market in 2009, compared with Apple’s 14.4 percent.

—Financial standing: HTC’s 2009 consolidated revenue was 144 billion Taiwan dollars, or $4.5 billion, down 5.2 percent from the previous year. Gross profit in 2009 was down 9.5 percent, according to the NYTimes. That compares to Apple’s last fiscal quarter, which led CEO Steve Jobs to brag: “If you annualize our quarterly revenue, it’s surprising that Apple is now a $50+ billion company.”

“This is what happens in Silicon Valley,“ Gary Chia, head of Greater China research for Yuanta Securities in Taipei told the New York Times. “When you’re big enough to become a threat, I’ll slap a suit on you sometimes just to slow you down.”

But a lot of observers have pointed out that the lawsuit isn’t about HTC at all. Instead, it’s about the threat of Google and its Android operating system, which is mentioned continuously throughout the lawsuit (See Engadget’s rundown here). Those suspicions gained some momentum today when unprompted Google sent out a statement about the lawsuit to press. A spokesperson said: “We are not a party to this lawsuit. However, we stand behind our Android operating system and the partners who have helped us to develop it.”

More so, there’s a reason why Apple isn’t suing Google, or for that matter other handset makers that are building Android-based phones, like Motorola (NYSE: MOT) and Samsung. Jonathan Zittrain, a professor at Harvard Law School, told the New York Times that Apple is simply going after a less powerful company first—a company with less resources, and a potentially smaller patent portfolio. “It clearly involves some form of litigation strategy of picking off the weaker members of the herd first. They can always add Google to the suit later on,” he said.

Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) unveiled a completely new smartphone operating system last month that in no way resembles its past corporate image. The new Windows Phone 7 fits somewhere between Bing’s visually appealing user interface and the consumer friendliness of a Zune music player.

But to make the necessary leap required to compete with Apple’s iPhone, Microsoft had to start from scratch. In a New York Times story detailing Microsoft’s overhaul of its mobile division, Terry Myerson, the VP in charge of Windows Phone engineering said: “To be entirely candid, the iPhone opened our eyes as to some things that needed to be done that were not in our plan…Some execution had really gone astray.

While Microsoft still has a long way from regaining lost market share in the mobile space, it’s definitely showing a commitment to starting over with a clean slate.

Microsoft separately confirmed today that any previous phone running its older Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system will not be upgradable to Windows Phone 7. That includes the well-received HTC HD2, which has nearly all of the required specs for the new OS. However, it has five buttons—and all Windows Phone 7 devices going forward will be limited to three, reports APCmag.com. Natasha Kwan, Microsoft’s Mobile GM in the Asia-Pacific region told APC that “Because we have very specific requirements for Windows Phone 7 Series the current phones we have right now will not be upgradable.”

The new Windows Phone 7 operating system will likely be more consistent because Microsoft demands it of its hardware manufacturing partners. Despite current Windows Phone owners likely being disappointed by this news, it shows just how serious Microsoft is about remaking the division. In the NYTimes story, other moves were detailed, including bringing some of Microsoft’s top talents from around the company to the mobile division. In addition to shifting internal resources, it also hired people from companies like Nike and Procter & Gamble who could bring different perspectives. One of the hires included Myerson who came from the Exchange group. Another was Joe Belfiore, who worked on projects such as Windows XP, Media Center and Zune.

The initial perception of Microsoft’s Windows 7 after Steve Ballmer announced the high-level concepts in February at Mobile World Congress was that it was going to be an immediate hit. Sites like Gizmodo and Engadget practically salivated. Engadget’s first impression consisted of this conclusion: “This really is a completely new OS—and not just Microsoft’s new OS, it’s a new smartphone OS, like webOS new, like iPhone OS new.” Now Microsoft will just have to deliver on these promises. Next up, it will detail more of its vision at Mix, a three-day developer conference in Las Vegas from March 15 to 17. Stay tuned for all the details.

Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week will reveal in gory detail just how complicated the industry has become.

If you don’t believe me, just consider this short list of ironies: Google’s Eric Schmidt will give one of the show’s first keynotes despite the company releasing its first phone only 16 months ago; Nokia (NYSE: NOK) is not expected to announce a phone for the first time in a decade; Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) will try to grab the spotlight with a new version of its Windows phone, after losing its grasp on enterprise market; and Verizon Wireless is co-hosting a press conference with Skype, the VoIP-provider that has yet to gain the hearts of any major operators.

These changes have come about in the past three years after Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) released the iPhone and left everyone scrambling to come up with something bigger and better.

In that time, partners have become competitors, hardware makers have become service providers and operators have been stuck in the middle dealing with the consumers who demand more at cheaper prices. Take today’s pre-show announcements as examples: Samsung announced the Wave, a new smartphone based on an operating system it built, and Sony Ericsson announced Creations, a publishing platform that is designed to shake-up the content industry.

For all the latest on who is doing what, follow me at Mobile World Congress as I attend back-to-back press conferences, listen to dozens of keynotes, conduct one-on-one interviews, and eat enough ham and tapas for all of you. For live updates, follow me on Twitter at @triciad, or sign up for our daily newsletter on our web site, or check the site during the day (Barcelona time).

Here’s a rundown of this week’s schedule:

—Sunday (today): Things kicked off early with simultaneous press conferences from Samsung and Sony (NYSE: SNE) Ericsson (NSDQ: ERIC). See respective articles here and here.

—Monday: Nokia is hosting a press conference at a hotel near the convention center. It has opted not to have a booth on the show floor, and will talk about services. For the first time in a decade, it’s not expected to announce a phone. First, Nokia will make a joint announcement with Intel (NSDQ: INTC), then it will have a solo event. Later, Microsoft will be the one to watch—its widely expected to unveil its latest Windows Mobile phone. Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM) will also host a press event.

—Tuesday: Morning press conferences from Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile unit and HTC. The evening will consist of a tight series of events moving quickly from Skype’s and Verizon’s joint press conference to Google’s keynote with Eric Schmidt.

—Wednesday: Keynotes will be given by a number of companies, including RIM (NSDQ: RIMM), Adobe (NSDQ: ADBE) and Telefonica.

—Thursday: Keynotes will focus on the trendy topic of mobile advertising and next generation mobile networks, like LTE.

When we did the first version of this chart heading into the 2009 holiday sales season, four contenders—including the unexpected Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS) Nook—were set to crowd the instant-download e-reader field that Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN) had to itself for the last two years. Within weeks it already had changed: the iRex missed its 2009 ship date, PlasticLogic released more info on the Que, Amazon kept fine tuning the Kindle, and more e-readers flooded the zone at CES.

Then, the landscape tilted again Wednesday with the beyond-hyped unveiling of the Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) iPad, the tablet designed to be a better e-reader within a multipurpose media approach. Sure, some of the other devices offer the ability to listen to MP3 music and Kindle users can surf some elementary web waves. But Apple is the only one claiming to have a device that is as good an e-reader as it is a video player, music center or internet portal. (It’s also the only one where you can still use the platform for other e-readers: both Kindle and Barnes & Noble have iPhone e-book apps and are expected to be on the iPad.)

So how does the iPad stack up against its more single-minded competition? We can’t say yet how it really compares to reading a novel on a Kindle, textbooks on a Kindle DX or business pdfs on a Que. What we can do is lay out the specs and features side by side. (Click on on that link or the image for full-size version.) We’ve limited the comparison to the highest-profile devices that include 3G access and or Wi-Fi as an option. By size, the main competition is the Kindle DX and the upcoming PlasticLogic Que. In the paperback-size division, it’s the Kindle, the Nook and the Sony (NYSE: SNE) Daily Edition.

Update: Many thanks to those who posted or sent in suggestions about how to make this better; we’ve been incorporating many of them in real time. Some suggestions are a matter of interpretation so may not be reflected in this weekend’s updates but we will take them into consideration for future charts.

For some critics, the lack of participation from content companies at yesterday’s iPad launch threw some cold water on predictions for how the new device could help the media business regain revenues lost to the web.

But if you looked hard enough, publishers were there and, more importantly, some have plans to invest heavily in the platform. In an interview, President of Condé Nast Digital Sarah Chubb said they are moving fast to make sure they have three to four magazines ready for the iPad’s launch in 60 to 90 days. Chubb: “It’s the most important thing to happen to our business models in a year. It’s really exciting if you are sitting in our shoes.”

To be sure, Conde Nast is only one publisher, but Chubb’s excitement stems from their experience with the iPhone. In December, they launched GQ, their first magazine app that garnered 7,000 downloads. In Jan., those numbers doubled. At those levels, it starts to make a significant impact on GQ’s overall circulation of 850,000 to 900,000. “It’s bigger than any physical store outlet,” she added.

The revenues aren’t bad either. Users pay for each issue, and there’s advertising to consider. With the iPad, ads can be as large as they are in the magazine and can be interactive. Chubb said in a survey, iPhone users said they were just excited about what they could do with the ad as the advertiser. They can ask, “I like that jacket, can I buy it now?” Yes, they can. Chubb added while the value of the platform may be hard to see today, it may be indicative of where we will be in 10 years. The trend is moving away from print to digital. “Particularly among the younger demographic. Everything is digital and mobile.”

What does Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) believe? I asked Apple’s SVP of worldwide product marketing Phil Schiller if it’s possible that the iPad can help resurrect the media industry. Not surprisingly, he said, “Absolutely. Why not?” In general, however, Apple isn’t providing much innovation to the publishers—other than offering an internet device with a large display. For instance, people who buy the Amazon (NSDQ: AMZN) Kindle download books over a cellular network without even knowing it because the connectivity is included in the device’s price. The iPad won’t have that luxury, and if people are already paying for broadband in the home and broadband for their phone, $15 to $30 more a month for limited data on the iPad will be hard to swallow.

It’s not that Apple isn’t innovating at all. The five book publishers who have agreed to sell titles in the iPad’s iBookstore will receive 70 percent of the revenue, with Apple taking the remainder, reports the WSJ. That is a different business than the industry is used to and could result in individual books being priced at individual prices. But Apple isn’t offering that deal, or any other business model, like subscriptions, to other content companies. “There’s no iMagazines and there’s no iNews,” Sara Ohrvall of Swedish media company Bonnier told the WSJ. “Either we have to package our products much differently, or we just lost the paid content game.”

However, the biggest learning curve will come in knowing how to hold it: Will you use a stand, hold it with one hand while you navigate with the other, or lay it in your lap? Will you type with all of your fingers, or will you use your pointer fingers like an iPhone? These were the things that did not come naturally.

—iBookstore: The device is designed to surf the web and consume media like a workhorse. Apple preloads it with the user-friendly iBookstore, which stocks an as-yet unannounced number of books from five of the largest book publishers. Books are stored on a virtual bookshelf with the images of the covers facing out. Flip the bookcase over, and you’ll enter the secret passageway to the store. When the book is loaded, it looks like actual pages of a novel. With a swipe of the finger, you’ll see the page fold over in front of of your eyes. Whether the screen is as easy on the eyes as other e-readers, like the Kindle, it was too soon to tell. The starkness of the white pages may get tiring, although the font size is easily changed. For now, the bookstore will be limited to the iPad, so users can’t read books interchangeably between the iPad and the iPhone.

—Photos: This is where the device really shines. Photo albums can easily be expanded to scan for the photo you are looking for. Photos are also viewable by location where they were taken. It’s extremely quick to jump back and forth. One nice feature, Origami, automatically creates collages of multiple photos in each slide.

—Applications: This is where things could have gone wrong, but Apple came up with a fairly easy solution. Today, there are 140,000 applications on the iPhone, and it would be a pain if each one had to be re-developed for the iPad’s larger screen. To get around this, the applications appear in their original size, so they look like a small box on the screen. Users have the option of blowing it up to fullscreen, making them readable, albeit pixelated. In a hands-on demo, I tried a stargazer app, which allows you to move around the device to see the various constellations.

—Typing: As I said before, how to hold it was sort of a mystery. This is only magnified when typing. When it’s in landscape mode, the Qwerty keyboard is almost equal in size to a laptop. It was confusing. Do you hunt and peck with your fingertips, or try to type regularly? Thumbing is completely out of the question. Apple CEO Steve Jobs even struggled with this on stage when he had spelling errors in an email he sent. After retyping it ended up being: “Wow we really announcing the iPad!” One solution for this is the keyboard dock accessory.

—Other hardware specs: The iPad is thinner and lighter than any netbook currently on the market, said Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs. What’s more, the screen is 9.7 inches and it has a 1 Ghz Apple-built processor using Apple’s own silicon. The iPad comes with at least 16 to 64 gigs of flash storage; WiFi; 3G is optional; Bluetooth; an accelerometer; compass; speaker; microphone, and a 30-pin connector for Apple accessories. Accessories include a keyboard and a case, which also converts to a stand. The battery life is expected to last for 10 hours (even when watching video on a cross-country flight, Jobs says). It does not have a camera.

—Pricing and shipping: Still with AT&T (NYSE: T) for 3G: Data plans: $14.99 for 250 megs a month, unlimited for $29.99. Free AT&T WiFi. No contract. Wi-Fi only models ship in 60 days; 3G models in 90. The price: $499 for the base model with Wi-Fi and 16GB; $599 for 32GB, $699 for 64 GB. Add $130 for 3G and the most expensive model is $829. Of course, that doesn’t include what it will cost to accessorize, say adding a case, or the handy-dandy wireless keyboard dock.

As we saw live at the Apple event in San Francisco, here’s how the tablet could be used in practice across a variety of mediums, including games and newspapers:

—Apple’s iBookstore: Apple is launching an e-reader within the iPad. Users will be able to buy books from the iBookstore. Once the books are downloaded, they will be stored on a virtual shelf. The books’ pages look like a real novel and flip just like in real life. Five major book publishers are on board: Penguin, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Hachette Book Group and Macmillan Publishers.

—EA Mobile Travis Boatman: During a demonstration of “Need for Speed,” Boatman said: “We’ll be able to bring all of our great games from the iPhone to the iPad in no time at all…It’s like holding a high-definition TV screen close to your face.” Because of the screen real estate, new features are added like a gear shifter.

—The New York Times: Martin Nisenholtz said that since The New York Times website is beautiful on the iPad, why bother with an application? “Well, our app for the iPhone has been downloaded three million times, and we wanted to create something that combines the best of print and digital all in one. It captures the essence of reading the paper. Articles can be saved, and read later on the iPhone.”

—Gameloft: Mark Hickey asked, “What’s different? When you hold the device in your hands, the display is huge, which makes the game immensely fun to play…The iPad allows us to interact with the game in a way that wasn’t possible before. In a first-person shooter, you can draw a box around a group of enemies and shoot them simultaneously.

—iWork: Apple has tweaked its productivity software suite, which includes Keynote to make presentations. It also allows you to make spreadsheets using touch, rather than the traditional mouse. The iPad versions are $10 each.

The din of rumor and the clamor of speculation inspired by Apple’s expected announcement is about to peak. We’re all convinced this tomorrow’s “one other thing” will be some kind of magical tablet device. We all expect it will be a big deal. And in these past weeks we’ve witnessed a parade of writers, analysts, and consumers who have all published their “wish” or even “guess” (or, in some cases, “fantasy”) lists. But we have yet to see what we think really matters: an Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) “should” list that identifies the things Apple needs to do to ensure that its device is successful.

Let’s put this on the record: Apple has to create a new category here—that’s something it has not done in more than two decades. Apple’s genius is its ability to consumerize a device category through great design, software and marketing. It did it with the PC, the digital music player, and the [shudder] smartphone. The coming tablet is an oddity. It is flawed in meaningful ways: It’s a computer without a keyboard, it’s a digital reader with poor battery life and a high price tag, and it’s a portable media player that can’t fit in a pocket.

As a result, Apple has to tap the 6 million people who will buy e-readers this year and/or the 7% of adults interested in buying a netbook and help them see that this new tablet is a new version of all of those things and more, where its value comes from their elegant integration into a single, awesome user experience. This is something we think Apple can do, but only if it puts the right objectives on its to-do list. We’re not rooting for Apple per se, except to the extent that Apple: 1) improves consumers’ lives, and 2) cleverly exploits market opportunities or gaps to force everyone else to elevate their game. (Note that #2 will lead to more of #1; this is a fruit of free-market economics, and we are eager to taste it.)

So into the vast cacophony of opinion that is about to get turned up past 11 (apologies to Spinal Tap), we offer the following three things we think Apple should do with its announcement tomorrow. Accompanying this recommendation is a warning: if Apple doesn’t do these things, or do them well, the long-lauded tablet form factor will remain a peculiarity.

1.	Create a new device category around personal media. Today, people spend as much as five or six hours a day with media (most of it video, next with audio, then with text—younger consumers spend as much as seven hours a day on media, including social media, much of it overlapping with other media). Nowhere do they have an integrated experience that ties it all together. Of course, Apple knows it is well positioned to offer music, video, and, soon, books, magazines, newspapers and web-based opinion and commentary. However, the critical link that would make Apple’s tablet really soar is the inclusion of personal media: photos and home videos. Viewing photos is a top-five online activity, digital photography has created a whole new set of behaviors that Flickr, Picasa and others have tried to serve.

Now with the rise of Flip cameras, video is about to achieve the same prominence, but no one has a handle on it yet because it’s harder to edit, manage and share. Putting all of these personal and professional media into the device and synchronizing them intelligently across other devices with the help of the dreaded “cloud,” that’s where Apple can take it all to the next level. Importantly, personal media are by definition social media because they have to be shared to be valued. Apple needs some to do work here—social media has not been a strength. Nail this combination of professional, personal and social media, and a new device category is born.
2.	Work its user-experience magic on connectivity. Among the most hotly debated questions about the tablet is what flavor of connectivity it will possess, which mobile operator(s) may play a role, and what that role may be. Today’s 3G networks simply cannot support a Kindle-like pricing model (that wraps the delivery cost into the content price) for video, nor for a concept like the rich magazine that Time Inc. (NYSE: TWX) has demonstrated. To accommodate the full panoply of media offerings, Apple will need to rely on a combination of home broadband, WiFi, and cellular networks to seamlessly deliver and synchronize content using a complex model that optimizes based on cost, urgency and price.

This network dance is already visible to iPhone owners who know they can only retrieve certain content over WiFi or when physically connected to their iTunes library, but it’s a clumsy dance and Apple can—and should—do better. Here’s an idea: become a Virtual Network Operator (VNO, providing connectivity services without physically operating a network)...a smart VNO. Put a multimode radio into the tablet, negotiate wholesale rates with AT&T (NYSE: T) and Verizon (and others in the future), and do arbitrage pricing across networks to reduce pricing using market efficiencies. Sure, the carriers don’t want this but if anyone can do it, Apple can. After all, you’ll already have all the other retail and service components in place.

3.	Break open the meaning of the word “device.” All along, we’ve talked about this device as if it were a single form factor that would define a new era in media use and connectivity. But the future of selling devices is not in selling single devices; instead, it lies in selling device-based experiences, where families of devices work together to give consumers what they really want. That means the tablet must be introduced with a family of co-devices (not accessories, please don’t marginalize them by calling them that) that will make the device itself more flexible and therefore valuable. We’re talking Bluetooth keyboards, sure, but also a family of docks that position the tablet to be a bedside alarm clock, a bedroom Pandora radio player, a kitchen recipe stand, a family-room photo frame, and a home remote control. We’re talking about TVs that tablets can “publish to” wirelessly and HD cameras that can function in attached mode or work wirelessly from across the room—the same camera that will speak to your Mac, your iPhone, and anything else Apple makes.

There’s a lot more detail behind it, but this is our short “should” list for Apple. A list that, conveniently, applies to everyone who wants to take on or draft off of Apple as well. Amazon’s next generation Kindle should do the same (we’ve codenamed it “Kindle Flame” around here). We’ll be publishing a much more detailed analysis of the tablet market in the coming weeks once we have the full detail of Apple’s offering and can scour our consumer data for evidence of who wants—and can pay for—this kind of experience.

Has mobile operator Orange spilled the beans on the supposed Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) tablet?

Bloggers got themselves tongue-tied Monday, when they leaped on comments - given by owner France Telecom’s deputy CEO during a French radio interview - as “confirmation” that the device is indeed launching soon, equipped with webcam, network connectivity for videophone chat and a retail partnership with Orange itself…

Stephane Richard acknowledged the tablet in the interview with Europe 1 (video at NowhereElse.fr, embedded below. Asked if it could benefit Orange subscribers, he spoke about the possibility of an apparent video calling feature. Now the blogosphere is rife with reports Richard has “confirmed” specs and a strategic relationship.

But it was nothing of the sort, the Orange PR machine tells paidContent:UK: “A few comments taken out of context, then interpreted into English.”

A full statement emailed to us has further back-tracking: “These responses in no way reflect Orange’s confirmation of the existence of the rumoured device. The spokesperson was merely confirming that he is aware of the speculation surrounding a launch and that Orange would be delighted to have such a product were it ever to be available.”

Still, this wouldn’t be the first time that an Orange executive spilled the beans about an upcoming Apple device. Back in 2007, amid lots of speculation about who would stock the iPhone, and when, the CEO Didier Lombard informally told journalists that Orange secured the deal weeks before the official announcement.

That deal was eventually confirmed, although it turned out to be short-lived: the French regulator eventually overturned the exclusive arrangement a year later to allow other carriers to sell it, too—something that may well happen with other devices in the future, including this tablet that no-one wants to confirm.

After web reports of an upcoming January 26 Apple event announcing the tablet, Kara at AllThingsD upgrades the calendar forecast to January 27.

Here are just some of the photos that I collected from the biggest mobile stories at CES in 2010 this past week.

There, it unveiled the Nexus One Android phone, built by HTC.

In Q1 Palm sold over 800,000 smartphones worldwide, with the “vast majority” of those being Palm Pre, according to the company. But the Pre will be fighting for shelf space among never devices from Google (NSDQ: GOOG), LG (SEO: 066570) and Palm itself, which has said it will launch products before the end of May.

O2, which has exclusive rights to sell the Palm Pre in the UK, declines to give sales figures for individual devices.
But, if the rumors of slow sales are true, this might not be such a bad thing. As it is, the operator has admitted that its network is already feeling the strain of too much smartphone use.
