U.S. 2010 digital revenue: $400 million

Snapshot: Electronic Arts has extended its strength in video games to the digital realm, with Playfish (social games), Pogo (online games) and a series of mobile titles. Unlike rival Activision Blizzard, which is behind World of Warcraft, Electronic Arts does not, however, have a massively popular massively multiplayer online game. The company is hoping that will change with the release this year of Star Wars: The Old Republic, reportedly its most expensive title ever.

Key digital move in 2010: Following on the heels of its purchase of social-games startup Playfish in 2009, the company made a big mobile push in 2010 with the purchase of Chillingo, the publisher of hit iPhone game Angry Birds.

How we generated our estimate: The publicly traded company reported digital sales of $721 million during its calendar 2010, up 38 percent from 2009. About 56 percent of Electronic Arts’ overall revenue comes from North America—a percentage we also applied to the digital business.
