This is an unexpected development…The Australian Broadcasting Authority (ABA) has released a code which “prohibits mobile content classified X and requires restrictions on users wanting to access R or MA-rated material”. This goes a lot further than requiring proof of age to access adult content. The code will be reviewed in 12 months…
UPDATE: ZDNet Australia has more detail of the story, and points out something that I should have remembered but had forgotten. In Australia (I don’t know about other countries) pornography is only classified “X” if it is unsimulated sexual activity—ie, real. Otherwise it is classified “R” and restricted to people older than 18. So most “adult mobile content” that has so far been released would fall under the “R” categoy. The decision of the ABA makes a lot of sense when taken in the context that X rated material is illegal in all Australian states (although it is legal in the ACT and Northern Territory), so the mobile restrictions are simply in line with every other form of content.
