Macworld2007: Diggnation Rocks the House—Predicts Finger Condoms For iPhone

[by Carleen Hawn] Diggnation Founder Kevin Rose and his anchor Alex Albrecht produced Episode 80 of their hit show right off the Macworld Expo showroom floor today. Sitting on dais above a crowd of a few hundred 30-something (or younger) Macworld attendees, the pair drank beer while tearing through the virtues and vices of the latest Apple and Microsoft gear. It was fun, but those who turned up to learn something about new media didn’t walk away with much – except a free lighter or Diggnation t-shirt. Rose and Albrecht tossed schwag to the screaming throng, giving the podcast the mood of an MTV Springbreak in Daytona (with fewer tans). Diggnation is entertaining, and could be educational for a marketer. Here, an imperfect impression of what the Digg-generation wants:

On the iPhone
—Alex: “Leave it to Apple to take something in the market place, sort of, and make it awesome…but I don’t know if I’m going to buy one.”
—Kevin: “This thing is blazing fast.”
—Alex: “How many people here would buy the iPhone?” (Everyone.)
—Kevin: “Note to self, buy Apple stock.”
—Alex: They should do an Apple-designed Prius.
—Kevin: “It got a little weird typing on it with no buttons. I’ll make a prediction: Someone is going to make little finger condoms for it because nobody who buys it will want to get their screen messy. It’ll be cool. They’ll come in different colors and shit.”
—Alex: “iFinger. It works on multiple levels.” (Raucous laughter.)

On AppleTV & Xbox 360 :
  —Kevin: It’s pricey at $299
—Alex: But now I don’t need that Linksys Wi-Fi extender!”
—Kevin: “Microsoft tells us you’re going to be able to record shows while playing Xbox and chat while you’re watching them. I want to know if they are going to allow people to post their podcasts while they’re watching?”
—Alex: “Why doesn’t Microsoft start offering movies at $9.95 a month, then I don’t need Netflix.
—Kevin: “Yeah, I want to see movie rentals on AppleTV, too.”
—Alex: “You know what I just realized the audience isn’t drunk.”
  —Kevin: “Oh, No!”

But it was hard to tell for sure. With apologies to the surrounding exhibitors, Diggnation closed their show by asking the crowd to chant “Porn! Porn! Porn! Porn!” It’s scary to think what this crowd might do with the iPhone “Pinch” feature.
