WSJ: The largest US carrier, Cingular, is planning to offer a mobile banking service to its customers. However, in order to do this it needs the cooperation of the banks…“At this point, Cingular says it is in talks with a number of banks but so far hasn’t announced any deals”—the telco expects the service to be available early next year. The service is provided by an application (produced by Firethorn Holdings) that users can download to their phone, and Cingular claims the service will work on most of its handsets.
There’s already a number of mobile banking services around the world, notably in Africa (where often it is the only possible form of digital banking), the UK and some parts of Asia. FaithFone also has a mobile banking offering, which offers some alert services and basic account checking for a Visa card.
