Industry Moves: Vodafone Appoints New Chief For Europe; Splits Emerging Markets Unit Into Two
Vodafone (NYSE: VOD) CEO Vittorio Colao has made his first new changes to the global network operator since the July departure of Arun Sarin. Vodafone has appointed a new chief executive for Europe and has split its growing emerging markets unit into two divisions, the company said today. Michel Combes, currently chairman and CEO of France’s TDF group, the private equity backed French operator of shared facilities and terrestrial networks in Europe, has been tapped to head up the operator’s European region and will start October 1. He also joins the executive committee.
The company’s emerging markets division, which lumped Central Europe, Africa, and Asia-Pacific (EMAPA) together, will now split Central Europe and Africa into one unit, and Asia-Pacific into another. Vodafone said it would announce the CEO’s of the freshly minted divisions in “due course.” Vodafone also said that Verizon (NYSE: VZ) Wireless—“in light of its financial and strategic importance” would not be part of any operating region, and would be managed by CEO Vittorio Colao as well as other senior managers (release).
