Virgin Mobile USA Rolls Out No-Contract Data Offering For Laptops

Virgin Mobile USA (NYSE: VM) is rolling out a pre-paid offering for the broadband data market, turning the conventional practice of signing up for a two-year broadband data contract on its head.
Virgin said the service, called Broadband2Go, won’t require an annual contract, a monthly subscription or an activation fee. While this will likely appeal to the pre-paid set, or for those who want sporadic internet connectivity, it could be equally appealing to business people, who are traveling abroad. Release.

As with Virgin’s other services, the Broadband2Go offering will run on the Sprint (NYSE: S) 3G network. The modem, a Novatel Wireless device, will cost $150, and will be available exclusively at Best Buy Mobile in late June. The pricing can be a little confusing, and requires users to buy by the megabit, which can expire over a set period of time. For instance, a $20 Top-Up card can be used to purchase 250MB, which can be used for 30 days. Other data plans are available at $10, $40 and $60. A person’s usage can be easily tracked from an online portal provided by Virgin that tells you how much data you have remaining.
