Virgin Mobile Cuts Price Of Unlimited Plan To $50; Does Not Include Data
Virgin Mobile (NYSE: VM) has cut the price of its unlimited calling plan down to $50 from $80, joining the US’s second-tier carriers in a prepaid price war, reports AP. The new plan rolls out April 15, and according to Virgin spokesperson Jayne Wallace the move was “definitely a response to the marketplace.”
But the plan doesn’t actually go as far as its competitors. Regional carriers MetroPCS and Leap Wireless have both introduced unlimited prepaid plans for $35-50 a month, while in January, Sprint’s prepaid brand Boost, launched a $50 unlimited plan to stay competitive. But while MetroPCS, Leap Wireless and Boost all include data in their unlimited plans, Virgin Mobile does not. The new $50 plan includes voice only. Adding unlimited texting costs another $10 a month. As for access to the mobile web, users must pay an additional $5-$10 a month depending on how much data they think they will consume. In addition to $50 call plan, Virgin also rolled out a $20 text-only monthly plan, which includes unlimited texting, pictures, IM, e-mail, and video, but no voice calls.
Virgin, which has 5.4 million customers in the US, piggybacks on Sprint’s network and said that its price cut came after it was able to renegotiate its rates with the carrier.
