Verizon Wireless Reinstates 4INFO’s SMS Service Following Advertising Changes
Verizon Wireless is satisfied with the improvements that 4INFO is making regarding its free, ad-supported SMS alerts services, and said it will reinstate the company’s service tomorrow morning after blocking it last Friday.
Verizon Wireless sent a letter to 4INFO’s CEO Zaw Thet today with the news that the service will be turned back on. Verizon wrote: “We are pleased you have removed all premium cross-promotion advertising from your service, or text2shortcode advertising as described in your letter, and that you are committed to ensuring all such advertising remains eliminated going forward.” 4INFO was not immediately available for comment.
On Friday, 4INFO was blocked by Verizon Wireless, and any consumers who had signed up for 4INFO’s alerts, received a message saying that the service has been discontinued. The alerts that were banned were coming from the 44636 shortcode, and spanned such brands as the NBA or USA Today. Confused customers complained about the dispute on Twitter.
Verizon has requested that 4INFO send a message to its customers with this text: “Welcome back! Your alerts & access to 44636 (4INFO) have been restored. More at
4INFO.com. Sorry for the interruption. Reply STOP to opt-out.”
Verizon has declined to be too specific about what they objected to about 4INFO’s service, but said it was all about the consumer. In the letter, it explained: “There is a long history of deceptive advertising practices related to premium short code campaigns, which has resulted in many class action lawsuits, consumer protection investigations and harm to consumers, and we are committed to protecting our customers from such practices and to abiding by industry standards.”
