Verizon Licenses Broadcom Patent

Broadcom has another win in its patent dispute with Qualcomm—operator Verizon has agreed to pay royalties which will allow it to import and distribute the disputed handsets. “Verizon Wireless said it will pay Broadcom $6 for each handset in question, up to $40 million per calendar quarter and up to a maximum total payment of $200 million” reports Reuters. Qualcomm has rejected a $6 per handset royalty fee proposed by Broadcom. Considering Verizon subsidizes its handsets anyway it probably doesn’t seem like a lot of money for the telco to pay to ensure its high-end business is not interrupted. Perhaps more importantly, Verizon has also “entered a strategic alliance with Broadcom involving new mobile phone chips and other products”.
