Verizon Adds Second Droid To Holiday Handset Offerings; Tweaks Prepaid Data Plans

Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) will start selling a second Android device on Friday along with its first—the Motorola Droid. The device is the HTC Droid Eris, which is a variant of the well-received HTC Hero being sold by Sprint (NYSE: S) in the U.S. The Eris will cost $99, which is in-line with the iPhone 3G and cheaper than the Hero and most other smartphones. Word that Verizon will sell the Eris came with a flurry of other phone announcements, including the BlackBerry Curve 8530 and the touchscreen LG (SEO: 066570) Chocolate. Verizon also announced new pre-paid data offerings, which will allow for daily access for $15; weekly access for $30; and monthly access for $50. All offers come with fairly small usage caps. In October, Verizon first announced its partnership with Google (NSDQ: GOOG) at which point it pledged to introduce at least two Android devices by year-end. The handset announcements today, along with the Droid, were badly needed as Verizon was starting to get a reputation for having good network coverage, but for lacking any of the next-generation phones consumers want to buy.
