Twitter Chief Sees Mobile Services As Best Bet For Generating Revenue
Twitter may not yet have a revenue stream, but according to an interview in the Daily Telegraph, co-founder and CEO Evan Williams believes that mobile services will produce the best business models for it. As such, mobile is a “massive focus” for the company, said Williams, since “reach and revenue potential are undeniably huge.”

Williams said, “I think Twitter can create the most value on mobile phones, because it is more immediate. Most people cannot live without their mobile phones over their PCs and we believe we can enhance people’s lives on the move.” The microblog, he noted, could “do well on mobile” because the service is “native to it,” referring to the fact that messages are limited to 140 characters, which allows them to fit onto one text message.
But while he echoed Morgan Stanley analyst Mary Meeker’s assessment of the mobile internet nearly verbatim, noting that “mobile was bigger thank people think,” there was still very little detail as to what those revenue generating mobile business models might be. Evans did confirm, however, that there were plans “sooner rather than later” to charge brands for using the site commercially.
