Top Mobile Searches In 2008 Revolve Around Social Networks

Over the last 11 months, people used search engines on their phones overwhelmingly for one purpose: social networking. That finding was part of two separate announcements made by both Yahoo and AOL today. AOL (NYSE: TWX) said the top five searches conducted on mobile phones were: MySpace, AIM, iPhone, MocoSpace and Facebook. The list was very similar to Yahoo’s, which released the top 10 mobile searches today (the top three were MySpace, Facebook and Craigslist). After that, the topics widened a bit to include entertainment, weather and news. The seven remaining top searches were: movies, weather, the Olympics, The Dark Knight, Kim Kardashian, eBay (NSDQ: EBAY) and AIG.

The top mobile searches varied widely from what people were searching for on the PC. Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) said its top overall searches for the PC were: Britney Spears, WWE, Barack Obama, Miley Cyrus, RuneScape, Jessica Alba, Naruto, Lindsay Lohan, Angelina Jolie and American Idol. AOL said the top news stories were focused on the presidential election, followed by the Olympics and the financial bailout. Likewise, the top newsmakers were: Barack Obama, Sarah Palin, and then at No. 4 and 5 were Hillary Clinton and John McCain, respectively. The No. 3 newsmaker was “Pregnant Man.”
