imageTiVo (NSDQ: TIVO) is rolling out a mobile site, m.tivo.com, that lets subscribers use their cellphones to search for and record TV shows, reports Broadcastingcable.com.  Currently, the service is only available to Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) customers who pay a fee to access it. In September, TiVo and Research in Motion (NSDQ: RIMM) announced they were developing a similar application especially for Blackberry handsets expected to launch before the year’s end. The new web site, however, is free and can be accessed by any subscriber with an internet-enabled handset. Anyone can use the mobile site to search for shows to watch, but scheduling from cellphones can only be done by TiVo customers with a Series2 or Series3 set top box.

Tricia adds: There’s a little back story here. The Verizon TiVo application was built buy Action Engine, and only worked on Brew-based phones. Action Engine was recently acquired by Mobui, which developed the new site. A TiVo spokeswoman said there’s no plans to discontinue the downloadable app for Verizon, or the more recently announced app designed for BlackBerry. However, unless people are using the application daily, I’m not sure why people will continue to pay for an app when they can get the same services for free on a site?
