T-Mobile To Restructure Data Plans In Time For New Handset Portal

T-Mobile USA looks like it is getting ready to restructure its pricing plans to reflect the data-heavy devices it is launching along with its new 3G network, reports TmoNews. For phone users who want some data, there are two plans—one for $10 which gives you 50 megabits of data and 200 text messages, and another plan for $20 that gives you twice as much data and unlimited text messages. For high-end devices, like the G1, BlackBerry, and the Sidekick, unlimited plans, which cap data at 10 GB and include unlimited text messages, are $35 a month. For the same plan, but only 200 messages, it’s $10 less. There are some pretty consumer friendly features, such as for those who go over their data plans; they will be charged 20 cents per KB with a cap of a $15, and the smartphone data plans also include access to T-Mobile’s hotspots. One feature, which is hard to tell if it’s helpful or not, is that when you switch your SIM from one phone to another, T-Mobile will automatically switch you over to another plan, if required. Not sure what happens if you do this multiple times a month, or day.

The story also indicates that these prices will go into affect with T-Mobile’s new Web2go service, which sounds a lot like its parent company’s Web ‘n’ Walk service. It’s too early to know specifics, but Web2go is destined to replace T-Zones, the carrier’s portal. The service will be centralized around a Yahoo search bar, and will keep a record of what customers buy, so they can download a wallpaper or ringtone to a new handset.
