Symbian Woos Developers By Not Building Another App Store

Symbian Foundation is hoping to lure developers to its operating system by providing consulting services and access to a wide distribution network, including partnerships with Nokia’s Ovi Store, Samsung’s Application Store and AT&T’s MEdia Mall.

While an aggregated approach is a good idea, the only big partner here is Nokia (NYSE: NOK) since neither Samsung or AT&T (NYSE: T) have a ton of Symbian phones in their current portfolios. For this program to make a bigger splash, Symbian will have to win over the hearts of carriers in Europe and Asia, where Symbian is more relevant.

The program is called Symbian Horizon, and while Symbian provided some details today, it will officially launch in October. Symbian said the program will help developers with distribution, marketing and even some technical support. On a practical basis that includes language translation services and even feedback on how to develop the app and which category it should be sold in once it’s ready.

Lee Williams, Executive Director of the Symbian Foundation, said it’s their goal to encourage new applications and increase revenues for developers. And, while maybe the U.S. market has been slow to adapt Symbian-based handsets, “we can help North American developers reach markets in Asia and Europe where the Symbian platform is widely known and loved.”

More details:

App stores supported: Symbian said Horizon will provide access to a variety of app stores, whether they are carrier-or manufacturer-operated. For now, they are naming Ovi Store by Nokia, Samsung Application Store and AT&T’s MEdia Mall as participants in the program.

Companies participating: Some companies that are looking to develop apps have already committed to the program. The list includes: Dynatech, The Guardian, MobileIron, National Public Radio (NPR), Skout, Ustream, and Wine.com.

Availability: Symbian Horizon is currently in development with a number of participating companies and developers, and will be generally available in October.
