Steve Jobs “Is In the House”
Has Steve Jobs returned to work? The Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) CEO has apparently been seen entering and leaving the company’s HQ in Cupertino, by a Reuters reporter and by employees who confirmed the sightings to CNBC’s Jim Goldman, who said, “Jobs is in the house!” Analysts took this as a sign that Apple may have its CEO back early, following his nearly six-month absence since taking a medical leave in January. On Saturday, the WSJ reported that Jobs had received a liver transplant in April, and was expected to return to work at the end of June.
On Monday, Jobs was quoted in a press release on Apple selling one million new iPhones in three days. The WSJ reported today that even if Jobs does return to Apple, COO Tim Cook may keep the extended duties he took over while Jobs was on leave. Indeed, now that Cook’s shown that he can run Apple, analysts are now worried if he will leave. In the past, he has been approached by several big tech firms including, reportedly, Motorola (NYSE: MMI) and Dell. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster told the WSJ, “At this point, losing Tim Cook would be a bigger deal to investors than if Steve Jobs stepped aside. Just that thought makes my stomach tighten up.”
