Sprint (NYSE: S) Nextel will be canceling PC downloads from its music store in about two weeks, RCR reports. “Beginning (Oct. 15), Sprint Music Store purchases will no longer include a second PC copy,” reads a note on the service’s website. Customers who have already purchased tracks must download the PC copy to their desktop by Oct. 14 it adds. The service currently allows customers to purchase tracks directly to their cellphone for 99 cents while a second copy can be downloaded to their computer later. The Groove Mobile-powered store at Sprint always had an odd caveat when it came to the PC copy anyway. Customers can download a second copy of the track on their PC, but DRM only allows it to be played on the handset on which it was originally purchased. Perhaps few customers actually downloaded the PC copy or maybe the DRM restrictions brought on too many customer service calls to the carrier.

VCAST Music With Rhapsody from Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) gives customers the option to purchase a track over-the-air on their cellphone for $1.99, but it includes a DRM-free (and higher quality) master copy that can be downloaded later on their PC. We sent out multiple requests to Sprint for more details today, but haven’t heard back yet.
