Sprint Launches New TV Commercials Without CEO Dan Hesse; One Features Twitter
Sprint (NYSE: S) has launched a new advertising campaign, but the new ones won’t feature CEO Dan Hesse. “Analysts see the decision to remove Hesse from the ads as a response to dropping trust levels in CEOs given the current banking and insurance scandals,” reports Wireless Week. Hesse’s pay for 2008 was valued at $14.2 million…before the stock tanked. The new campaigns, “What’s Happening Now?” and “Why Throw your Money Away?,” will be run in print and on TV, but also online where ads will appear on high-profile homepages, like YouTube, Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO), MSN and AOL (NYSE: TWX). The ads are intended to emphasize the real-time information available on Sprint and the amount of money families can save.

In the commercial called “What’s Happening Now?,” Sprint gives a high-profile shout-out to Twitter, the popular micro-blogging service that has been rampant among early adopters, but has not yet hit the mainstream. The commercial, which is running across the country, says: “233,000 people just Twittered on Twitter,” and “26 percent of you viewing this have no idea what that means,” VentureBeat reports. The commercial’s intent is to list all the things people can do right now with their phones—like send emails, look up restaurants, make calls, or send text messages during a business meeting. Tweeting is just one of them, although it sounds a lot more mysterious and cool if the person doesn’t know what you are talking about.
