SoonR Closes $9.5 Million Second Round, Led By Cisco

Silicon Valley- and Denmark-based SoonR, which makes a remote PC access system for mobile devices, has closed a $9.5 million second round funding, led by Cisco (NSDQ: CSCO), with previous investors Intel (NSDQ: INTC) Capital and Clearstone Venture Partners also taking part. This brings its total funding to $15.5 million, and SoonR’s CEO, Patrick McVeigh, says the company will use the money to beef up its engineering team and build out its operator distribution channel. SoonR’s service allows users to access information on their PC from a mobile phone (or any device with a suitable browser), and it’s focusing on selling the service through European operators with converged wireless and fixed-line networks, which can offer SoonR to their corporate customers.

“What we’re finding is that in Europe in particular, we have converged operators offering wireless, WiFi, broadband, and POTS lines as a package to businesses,” McVeigh said in an interview. “What they’re looking for, and in many cases, already have money budgeted to deploy services across their networks to allow users to get their information on whatever device and network they’re on.”

He added that the investment by Cisco carries strategic as well as financial benefits. SoonR’s corporate sponsor within Cisco is in the company’s collaboration group, and its push to develop tools and services in this market could open a number of possibilities for the integration of SoonR features into Cisco products, McVeigh said.
