Sony Computer Entertainment Takes Games Mobile With Player X; Thumbplay Nabs Off-Deck Deal
Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios has, for the first time ever, licensed some of its PlayStation titles to be published by a third party for mobile. Player X nabbed the rights to publish mobile versions of Buzz! and Destruction Derby while Thumbplay secured off-deck distribution rights for Player X’s video and game content in a separate deal to be announced this afternoon. In the deal with Sony (NYSE: SNE) Computer Entertainment, Player X will have exclusive rights to publish both titles throughout Europe. The mobile version of the Buzz! franchise is set to be released this fall while Destruction Derby is on target for early 2009. (Release).
Thumbplay’s deal with Player X is also a first, being the latter’s first direct-to-consumer partnership. Thumbplay will now begin distributing titles from Player X’s catalog including the Hellboy Animated series, videos based on films from Universal Studios and Paramount Pictures, and games such as The Crystal Maze and High School Days. This is the second major deal for Thumbplay in less than two weeks – earlier this month the company made a deal with MTV to manage MTV Mobile’s storefront.
