HTC To Offer At Least Three More Android Phones
Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC plans to roll out more than three new Android-based phones in 2009, with a second generation version of the G1 to roll out in the second quarter, HTC CEO Peter Chou said at an investment forum in Tapei today, reports Dow Jones (NYSE: NWS) (via easybourse). Chou also said that the G1 exceeded its sales target of 1 million units, though he did not say by how much.
HTC, the largest maker of Windows Mobile-based phones, also said that it would launch “no more than 20” new smartphones this year, including the Android models. The company’s other goal for 2009 is to enter the handset market in China, where it is hoping to double the number of sales it currently does there. Chou said China was especially important now that the world’s largest mobile phone market by subscriber numbers, had issued 3G licenses. China currently accounts for 5 percent of HTC’s revenues.
Finally, Chou said HTC was on the look out to acquire more phone design and technology companies. Last December, it purchased San Francisco-based consumer product designer One & Company Design. In 2008, HTC saw sales jump 29 percent to NT$152.56 billion (US$4.45 billion) compared to a year ago.
