SK Telecom And Sony Pictures Sign Deal To Bring Blockbusters To Mobile

South Korea’s largest operator SK Telecom (NYSE: SKM) has struck a deal with Sony (NYSE: SNE) Pictures Entertainment to bring more than 200 Hollywood blockbusters, including Spiderman 3 and The DaVinci Code to its mobile subscribers. The Korea Times reports that SK Telecom, which has some 22 million subscribers, signed a four-year contract with Sony Pictures Television International to supply up to 60 old and new movie titles a year for mobile handsets.

The video-on-demand service will charge 1,000 to 2,000 won per title (US$1-2), which does not include the data traffic fee to download the film. SK Telecom is encouraging subscribers to purchase an unlimited data traffic package if they are interested in the film service. SK Telecom says it believes this is the first deal in the world where full-length Hollywood films will be available on mobiles. Still, it acknowledged screen size and battery life presented “practical problems” for the service.
