Sirius iPhone App Set For Second-Quarter Launch

Sirius XM (NSDQ: SIRI) Radio will seek to expand its audience by launching an iPhone application next quarter, which will be available to Sirius’ “19 million subscribers and to Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) Inc’s 7 million U.S. iPhone users” reports Reuters (I assume they’d have to be both). It’s also available for iPod Touch users. “This is a large and interesting opportunity that will maintain our subscription-based economics while providing customers easier access to our content through means other than our traditional satellite-based platform,” Sirius President of Operations and Sales Jim Meyer said on a call with analysts.

Apparently the primary distribution outlet for Sirius is new car sales, which are expected to be about 9 million in 2009 instead of the historical average of 16 million. Its satellite radio sales also took a hit when a major customer, Circuit City, filed for bankruptcy. Whether or not the iPhone app can replace those customers is doubtful, but it shouldn’t cost Sirius much to offer the service. Sirius was working on an iPhone application back in August.
