Now people living in the Second Life can feel free to leave the house. Even though it would seem like an impossible feat to scale down the popular 3D virtual world, it apparently has been done—Second Life is now available on a mobile phone. A free beta application, available at http://www.vollee.com/secondlife, was created by Linden Lab and powered by Vollee, a 3G streaming service provider. People were allowed to pre-register for the beta back in February, but now it’s available for up to 40 3G and Wi-Fi enabled devices, but support for others devices, including the iPhone, is expected soon. The company claims its technology identifies a phone’s screen size and key layout, and then compresses the stream to minimize bandwidth requirements to make the virtual world look smooth, not choppy. All you have to do is download the client to the phone and then log-in to access your Second Life account. An early review at 1up.com gushes that “A PC-perfect version of Second Life runs on a phone that could barely handle some of the most elemental mobile games.”
