Samsung Embeds CNN International’s Java App Into Handsets
Samsung has scored a preloaded deal with CNN International. Starting in June 2008, for a six-month exclusive period, the news broadcaster’s new Java application will be embedded into Samsung handsets which will be made available in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia-Pacific and Latin America. The Java service will roll out first on Samsung’s G810 5-megapixel cameraphone and will give users one-click access to CNN International content and images. Users will also be able to submit “iReports” to CNN’s citizen journalism website by sending still images or video from their mobile handsets via a built in bookmark.

So does this exclusive deal really mean exclusive? In this case with CNN—who apparently doesn’t do exclusive content deals (this is considered an application deal)—it does. A spokesperson for CNN International said she was unsure at this point if more pre-loaded application deals would be made with other handset makers at the end of the six-month exclusive period.
