RIM Buys Torch Mobile—Will That Mean Better BlackBerry Browsers?

Looks like Research In Motion is serious about building a more user-friendly mobile browser for the BlackBerry. The company has bought out Toronto-based Torch Mobile, a mobile software development firm that specializes in open source and WebKit-based browser technology. Financial terms weren’t disclosed.

RIM (NSDQ: RIMM) has been very chatty recently about its plans to get the BlackBerry browsing experience on par with that of the iPhone; this deal gives them the technology (and likely the brainpower) to move toward that goal. Torch Mobile said its developers will continue to be active in the platform-agnostic WebKit community, even though their primary focus will be on the BlackBerry platform.
