image Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) will begin selling netbooks bundled with data as early as next quarter, according to Bloomberg citing a “person close to the project.” The carrier is apparently working with more than one computer maker to produce the low-cost stripped down laptops. Pricing and exact plan details have not yet been worked out, though Stifel Nicolaus analyst Christopher King estimates that the netbooks will be sold for $100 with the carrier subsidizing the rest.

The move into selling laptops is an attempt by carriers to get customers to take up monthly data plans, especially as the growth rate for wireless subscriptions slows. Verizon’s latest move is also being seen as a way to keep up competitively with AT&T (NYSE: T). In December, AT&T and Radio Shack began selling a $99 Acer Aspire One with a two-year monthly data plan at $60 a month that runs on its 3G network. The netbook usually retails for around $250 depending on configuration.

More on how bundled mobile data plans are helping European carriers after the jump.

In Europe, the strategy of offering mobile data bundled with cheap laptops or netbooks has helped carriers offset some of their voice revenue losses, with mobile broadband being one of the strongest areas of growth for many of the European telecoms groups. If the trend grows in the US, netbook data bundles will most likely come down in price. In the UK, where its five carriers are all aggressively pushing mobile broadband, some carriers are offering netbooks for free. Vodafone (NYSE: VOD), the UK’s second largest carrier, for example, offers a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 for free with a two-year monthly data plan starting as low as £20 a month ($26), though for only 1 GB of data.
