Report: The Next-Gen iPhone May Sport Fairly Minor Upgrades

While it is still unknown whether a new iPhone is coming this summer, there’s a report circulating today that a “source closely connected to Apple’s hardware team” is leaking the iPhone’s next-generation specifications and release date.

The source told the blog “Apple iPhone Apps” that the new iPhone will launch July 17 with features such as a digital compass and a video recorder, reports Wired.com.
But most of the updates are fairly tame. In fact, the largest update might be the ability to record video, and as we’ve noted before, that’s only significant because it would turn the iPhone into a powerful camcorder with video-editing capabilities. The big question is whether these upgrades will be tantalizing enough to beat all the other iPhone competitors set to hit this summer, like the Palm (NSDQ: PALM) Pre?
Some of the new features, after the jump…
—Memory: 32GB and 16GB storage (up from the current 16GB and 8GB models)
—Price points: maintained at $199 and $299
—Camera upgrade: 3.2-megapixel camera, up from 2-megapixel. Plus, vdeo-recording and editing.
—Appearances: No more metal band around the edge of the device; Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) logo on back will glow; Rubber-tread backing; sleeker design.
—Mechanics: OLED screen; 1.5 times the battery life; double the RAM and processing power; built-in FM transmitter;
—Navigation: Built-in compass, which would allow photos to be geotagged and turn-by-turn directions.
