Report: Motorola’s Reign Over The U.S. Market Ends Next Year

Motorola (NYSE: MOT), – still riding its years-long wave of success from the Razr, will end this year on top once more after selling the most consumer handsets in the U.S., but the dance ends next year, according to a new report from MultiMedia Intelligence. The handset manufacturer is expected to end 2008 with a 21 percent market share of the U.S. consumer market, but Samsung and LG (SEO: 066570) are on its tail and poised to take the lead in 2009. Interestingly enough, market share gains made by Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) and BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion, are coming at the expense of the incumbent manufacturers, the firm concluded. Overall, Motorola was the top choice for males this year while Samsung phones were more popular among women. BlackBerry is particularly popular with 35- to 44-year-olds, LG with 25- to 34-year-olds, Samsung with 12- to 17-year-olds and Nokia (NYSE: NOK) with the 65-plus crowd.
