Qualcomm’s seemingly never-ending battle with Broadcom over video technology patents isn’t over yet, but a federal court’s ruling yesterday affirmed a lower court’s decision against Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM), bringing it one step closer to the end, Reuters reports. In a slight win for Qualcomm, the court voided part of the previous court’s ruling that said the company couldn’t enforce the patents around the world. Dating back to a 2005 lawsuit that Qualcomm filed against Broadcom, the disputed patents deal with video compression technology. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit agreed with a lower court that found Qualcomm negligible for failing to disclose some of its patents in question to standards-setting bodies. By disregarding that step, courts are now determining whether Qualcomm waived its right to enforce infringement. The matter was sent back to the lower court with directions to narrow its scope. Qualcomm and Broadcom have been duking it out in courts and the International Trade Commission for years.
