Qualcomm’s MediaFLO Launches European Soccer Tournament Channel

MediaFLO said it launched a special TV station today called EURO to broadcast live video coverage of the 2008 UEFA European Soccer Championship until June 29 (The programming will be provided by ESPN (NYSE: DIS), which Qualcomm (NSDQ: QCOM) alerted me to today). The channel will feature 21 games and and cover 16 teams. Currently, MediaFLO is available through Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) and AT&T (NYSE: T) phones. The ability to launch a channel for this tournament for a limited time shows the flexibility of the network. But to pick such a European focused-event, makes me wonder if this goes back to rumors of MediaFLO going to the UK. In May, Qualcomm won a swath of spectrum in the UK, which at the time it declined to say what it intends to do with it.
