Qualcomm Gets Reprieve On Import Ban

Judge Haldane Mayer on the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit has agreed to stay a ban on importing certain mobile phones using Qualcomm chips that was ordered by the International Trade Commission in June. “Numerous companies that use Qualcomm chips in the cell phones they manufacture, including Motorola, Samsung Electronics, and T-Mobile USA appealed the ITC ruling. They argued that since Broadcom only filed its complaint against Qualcomm, the ITC did not have the authority to block imports by companies other than Qualcomm…The judge agreed” reports AP. The lift on the ban only applies to the appealing companies, which included AT&T. Unless I’m mistaken, this takes most of the pressure off Qualcomm because the handsets are manufactured overseas and imported by the manufacturers.
