Playboy Launches Ad-Funded Mobile Web Site

Playboy is trying an ad-funded model for the mobile web…people who go to Playboy (NYSE: PLA).com on a mobile phone will see a pared down page put together by Quattro Wireless with things like non-nude photos of models, Joke of the Day, Playboy Advisor and so on and so forth. That’s nothing there that’s likely to raise the hackles of anyone currently licensing Playboy content for mobile, but there’s enough free stuff there at a well known brands site to get some ad revenues (Quattro is also handling the ads). It’s also a way to get to the US market. Playboy started its mobile efforts by licensing to Dijji/Dwango, which went out of business about a year ago, partly because it overpaid for content licenses. Since then it has done OK in mobile with revenues from the market growing, and launching Playboy TV on mobile in Latin America. (release)
