PGA Mags Go Mobile; Monetizing Newspapers With Mobile

The Publishing Group of America has put its content on mobile: “Mobile content available from Relish, a food-focused monthly, includes recipes as well as searchable recipes on demand…The American Profile text service offers facts on demand and weekly tidbits about the 50 states. American Profile, which describes itself as “a magazine that celebrates the hometown spirit” is also experimenting with texting Bible verses and horoscopes” reports DM News. The services, run by DMD Mobile Holdings, cost $9.99 a month and are promoted with ads in the respective magazines—the company is looking at adding advertisements as well.

The Newspaper Business: Over at RCRNews Mark Desautels, VP Wireless Internet Development at CTIA, has penned an opinion piece on how mobile can help the newspaper industry. The crux of his argument is that while readers are coming to expect digital news to be free there are some things they will pay for, such as “to be pre-alerted to garage sales and classified ads featuring products of specific interest to them, especially if geographic proximity could be included (based, perhaps, on the Early Bird hypothesis)”. He also suggests that services can be built around the information that newpapers collect as part of their new-gathering function. “These services, not just the news, become the basis for the continuation of the subscription (plus advertising) model in the digital “newspaper” business.”
