Opera’s Mobile Browser Takes Slim Lead Over iPhone’s Safari
Opera Software (OSL: OPERA), the Norwegian browser firm, saw its mobile browser edge out the iPhone’s browser as the most popular mobile browser in the world in the month of May, according to Dublin-based web analytics firm Stat-Counter. The firm, which bases its findings on aggregate data that it collects on a sample of over 4 billion page views per month, said that 24.6 percent of the internet pages that were downloaded to mobile devices went through Opera’s mobile browser, while 22.3 percent when through the iPhone. That’s strictly for the iPhone, however. If the iPod Touch is counted as well, Apple’s browsers take the lead with a 37.2 percent share, as the iPod Touch alone accounted for 14.9 percent of the market in May.
Still, Apple’s overall share is down from April, where combined market share for the iPhone and iPod Touch was 42 percent. Could that be coming from the Blackberry? According to StatCounter, its share has been increasing since the start of the year, from 4.9 percent in January to 6.9 percent in May. Opera, meanwhile, may be able to further strengthen its share soon. In the US, where it already supplies Virgin Mobile (NYSE: VM) with its browser, its been reported that AT&T (NYSE: T) will soon be using its own customized version of Opera as its mobile browser of choice. Nokia (NYSE: NOK) browsers took third place, where it had an 18 percent share of the market in May.
