Omnifone To Launch MusicStation Preloaded On 3G Handset
British mobile music firm Omnifone will take on Apple’s iTunes and Nokia’s Comes With Music service with a cell phone loaded with its tethered download subscription-based MusicSation service which it will debut at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week, the Sunday Times reports. The phone is supposed to be a 3G one, which will let users quickly download songs straight to their phones, rather than the usual practice of sideloading it as with the 2G iPhone. Currently, in the UK MusicStation is available through Vodafone (NYSE: VOD). It has all of the big music labels signed on, including EMI, while Nokia (NYSE: NOK) has only signed Universal to Comes With Music. While there is gathering momentum behind the idea that DRM is standing in the way of mobile music, Juniper Research says that tethered download services, which typically charge a weekly subscription fee for “all-you-can-eat” downloads, are popular with mobile operators. The MusicStation phone will be available in stores by June.
