Burlington, Mass.-based Nuance Communications, which is focused on speech recognition, has acquired Philips Speech Recognition Systems, a business unit of Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG) specialized in the European healthcare market. The acquisition defers from other recent acquisitions in the mobile space, including SNAPin, which develops customer service software for mobile phones, and a failed attempt at buying SMS technology company Zi Corp. Nuance paid $180 million in stock for SNAPin and offered $40.5 Million for Zi. Nuance said this purchase will allow it to deliver speech-driven clinical documentation and communication solutions to healthcare organizations throughout Europe. Under terms, the transaction is valued at 66 million Euro ($96.1 million). The deal includes a cash payment of 21.7 million Euro and a deferred payment of 44.3 million Euro.
