Update: The company has now officially announced it...the deal is expected to close in Q4, and Oz will become part of Nokia’s (NYSE: NOK) Services & Software operative unit.

Nokia is about to buy Canadian mobile IM and e-mail Oz Communications, mocoNews has learned. The announcement may come as soon as tomorrow. This is in line with Nokia’s other mobile social media and communication buys over the last two years, including Loudeye, Twango, Plazes, Enpocket, Navteq and others.

Oz was founded about five years ago, and has raised around $71 million in three rounds over the years, the latest being a $10 million venture debt commitment earlier this year from Wellington Financial. Previous investors included VantagePoint Venture Partners, CDP Quebec, Solidarity Fund QFL and T-Mobile Venture Fund. Earlier last year Oz acquired Thumbspeed from Hands-On.

Oz’s mobile IM, e-mail and its new-ish social networking solutions are used by operators such as Verizon Wireless, Sprint, T-Mobile USA, Alltel, Rogers Wireless, Telenor and others. On the IM and e-mail side, it has integrated various e-mail solutions from Yahoo, MSN, AOL and others. On the social networking side, it has integrated Flickr, MySpace, Facebook and others into a suite of services. Nokia already has some overlapping services so would be interesting to see how the company integrates Oz’s services within its own. We do know that Nokia has also been looking at other rival communications services, and will Nokia ever make a move on the pureplay social networking side?
