Nokia Restructures, Adds CTO ‘To Accelerate Innovation’
Feeling the heat from ongoing unfavourable iPhone comparisons, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) is re-jigging its corporate structure to respond…
—Mobile Solutions (led by Anssi Vanjoki): The old Services from Devices & Services, plus more, it comprises Symbian Smartphones (Jo Harlow), MeeGo (Alberto Torres), Services (Tero Ojanpera).
—Mobile Phones (led by Mary McDowell): Providing services for low-end phones through Ovi Life Tools, Ovi Mail, Ovi Store and Nokia Money.
—Markets (led by Niklas Savander): Managing sales and marketing, solution selling, digital marketing transformation, supply chain sourcing.
At first glance, there’s little different - but the key is that a new Mobile Solutions division unites the old Services division (ie. Ovi), from Devices & Services, together with the Symbian smartphones that run Ovi.
—Former Sun software chief Rich Green is also joining inside this division as chief technology officer.
—Ex-Devices EVP Kai Öistämö becomes chief development officer and head of corporate development.
—Rick Simonson, the CFO who was moved to run the low-end mobile phones division last year, is now leaving Nokia.
“We are decisively moving to respond faster to growth opportunities we expect in smartphones and mobile computers,” says CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, who must now feel under pressure, in the announcement.
“Nokia’s new organizational structure is designed to speed up execution and accelerate innovation, both short-term and longer-term. We believe that this will allow us to build stronger mobile solutions - a portfolio of products and integrated services that connect people and enable new ways of communicating, sharing and experiencing mobility.”
