Nokia Keeps Global Smartphone Lead, But Apple’s Gaining Fast

Global smartphone shipments grew by 13.4 percent in Q209 compared to the same period last year as consumers refuse to let the recession get in the way of their flashy phones.
Research firm Canalysis says in a note that 38.1 million phones were shipped around the world in Q209—4.5 million more than Q208. The report also shows Finnish manufacturer Nokia (NYSE: NOK) is the world leader with 16.9 million handsets shipped in the quarter, a 10.4 percent year-on-year lift which gives it a 44.3 percent share of the global market. Given that Nokia primarily uses Symbian, it makes sense that it was the leading OS in Q2 and was installed on over half of all new handsets.
But lookout: Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) has a 13.7 percent market share, having sold 5.2 million iPhones in the quarter, and is clocking a phenomenal 626 percent year-on-year growth rate. Meanwhile, BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion’s eight million handsets shipped in the quarter gives it a 20.9 percent global market share, and now is being considered by some as the fastest growing company in the world.
—North America: The market grew by 40.1 percent in North America in Q2, compared with the same period last year, with 11 million handsets shipped. RIM (NSDQ: RIMM) was the market leader with 5.7 handsets shipped, a 56 percent share, but Apple is gaining rapidly with 2.6 million and an annual North American growth rate of 365 percent. Worse news for HTC, which saw sales of its handsets decline by 2.8 percent to 2.1 million.
—EMEA: Nokia is the clear leader here, making 71.2 percent of all handsets shipped in Q2, a total of 8.9 million. However, that’s flat on the same period in 2008 and as in America Apple is catching up fast with an annual growth rate of 1041.6 percent. In EMEA 14 million handsets were shipped in Q2, an 11.2 percent rise.
—Asia Pacific: Growth was slower in the Far East where shipments rose by just 2.9 percent to 11.4 million in Q2. Nokia again has the biggest market share with 56 percent and 6.8 million, with Sharp and Fujitsu trailing behind on 1.1 million and 1 million.
