Nokia has announced a set of tools (Web Run-Time) so that third-party developers can create widgets for its Symbian Series 60 smart phones. Widgets are lightweight web applications that don’t require a browser to run—making them particularly useful for mobiles. Web Run-Time and widget support will be available to S60 licensees as part of the S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2, which will be available in the third quarter of this year. Nokia isn’t the first company to use widgets, but by throwing its weight behind the technology it should make it easier to create widgets for the Symbian phones. (release)
