@ MWC: RealNetworks Wins Verizon’s V Cast Business; ThePlatform Loses It
Seattle-based RealNetworks (NSDQ: RNWK) unleashed a series of announcements at Mobile World Congress, detailing a number of customer wins to demonstrate that its video and music platforms are starting to gain momentum. In addition to the news we reported earlier in the week that RealNetworks has taken an undisclosed stake in SK Telecom’s digital music division LoEn, the company also announced it is now powering Verizon (NYSE: VZ) Wireless’s V Cast streaming video service. It was previously powered by another Seattle-based company, thePlatform, a subsidiary of Comcast (NSDQ: CMCSA). The service transitioned to Real’s platform in January, and now the company powers video for both Verizon and AT&T (NYSE: T). Release.

—SK Telecom (NYSE: SKM) strategic alliance: SK Telecom and RealNetworks have deepened their strategic relationship in mobile entertainment services. New services include: MelOn music-on-demand, ColoRing Ringback Tones, and others. Vern Poyner, RealNetworks SVP, said the partnership includes helping SK Telecom roll out services outside Korea. “They are motivated. They tried Helio, and now they are getting into services.
