Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and Google (NSDQ: GOOG) announced Tuesday that they had struck a deal to integrate the search engine with the handset giant’s search application Nokia Search. Initially, Google will be available in select markets on several handsets including the Nokia N96, Nokia N78, Nokia 6210 Navigator and Nokia 6220 classic. Google search will be added to more cell phone models in the future.

Search is one of the cornerstones in Nokia’s expansion into the mobile web, which the handset giant sees as more than just searching the mobile internet. Through its Nokia Search application, consumers can search through content on their device and do local searches through local search engines. Most importantly, Nokia has placed its search box on the active standby screen on some of is devices, which provides one click access to searches. Searches are also enhanced with Nokia’s other products, including its mapping and messaging applications. Nokia sees adding Google to its search application as covering its bases and providing its users with what it acknowledged was a product that was “synonymous with internet search.”
