More Management Changes At Motorola; Unveils Two Of The 50 Phones Launching This Year

When Motorola (NYSE: MOT) appointed Sanjay Jha as CEO Of Its Handset Unit and co-CEO Of Motorola, you knew more heads were going to roll as Jha went about putting the management in place that he wanted. The latest is the resignation of Rob Shaddock, the SVP responsible for consumer mobile products, reports Silicon Alley Insider. He is being replaced by John Cipolla, who has worked at Motorola for 30 years. He will lead consumer products and report directly to Jha.

If you want to hear more about Motorola’s middleman politics, Gizmodo has interviewed a handful of Motorolans, who blame engineers for shoving the design team aside. Perhaps this is why you need a 30-year veteran in charge of consumer products? One insider said: “There’s this amazing wealth of engineering talent, but there’s no system for harnessing that talent for the good of the consumer.” Another concurred: “With the engineers,” he said, “there’s this attitude of, “I create—what do you do? You pick out colors?’” Apparently, Motorola spent hours of research on what should follow the Razr, but it was largely ignored by managers who felt they could do no wrong after the handset’s huge success.

Despite all this, Motorola has something going for it. It’s still the No. 1 handset manufacturer in the U.S., and today, it has released two low-end handsets that are designed to play music and surf the Web. What’s more interesting is that these phones are apparently only two of 50 that will be released this year, reports Reuters.
