Mobile Search And Info Firms Go2 and 80108 Merge
Two relatively-well-funded companies in the mobile search and info space have merged: Go2, a mobile search and directory services firm based in Santa Ana, CA, and 80108 Media, a new-ish local mobile content startup based in Boston, are merging and the new company will be called Go2 Media.

The new company will be led by CEO Rob Adler, currently CEO of 80108. Lee Hancock, founder of go2, will join its board and remain as part of the combined company’s executive management team, focusing on “strategic initiatives and partnerships with carriers, content partners and advertisers,” the companies said. The company will also now be based in Boston.
Go2 was founded back in 1999, and earlier last year, received $13 million in funding from Geosign Corporation, an online publishing and marketing company based in Canada, and its affiliates. Also last year, it did a deal with Yahoo, whereby Yahoo’s sponsored search listings are featured in go2’s mobile search results. It operates a broad range of online and mobile websites including go2 Movies, go2 Dining, go2 Pets, go2 Golf and over 300 mobile websites dedicated to specific colleges and universities throughout the U.S., it says.
80108 launched in April this year, and had raised $12 million in two rounds of funding…investors included General Catalyst Partners, IDG Ventures Boston, Khosla Ventures, and Borealis Ventures. My post on their service was, well, let’s just say, scathing.
