Report: Mobile Gambling Is ‘Recession Proof’; Revenues Will Double To $3.6 Billion In 2009
Can any industry really be recession proof? Juniper Research thinks so. In a new report, the firm projects global mobile gambling revenues will more than double to $3.6 billion next year. But consumer spending on mobile TV and mobile games will decline as the economy worsens. Juniper Analyst Windsor Holden: “Gambling is essentially a recession-proof industry, as while there may be marginal reductions in the level of stakes amongst casual users, the overall appetite for gambling per se will be unaffected.” Still, the mobile gambling space faces many lingering roadblocks to mass adoption; all of which have to do with regulation. It’s long been touted as yet another area in the wireless industry ripe for growth and opportunity, but it hasn’t broken onto the scene like many believed it would. Juniper forecasts the UK will account for at least 30 percent of all mobile bets placed in 2008, but the country’s market share will decline over the next five years. Release.
