Berggi, the US-based mobile phone email provider, has struck a 3-year deal with Chinese internet portal Sina (NSDQ: SINA) to develop and provide subscribers with ad-supported mobile email services. The start-up’s mobile email service allow users to access their email from web service providers such as Yahoo, (NSDQ: YHOO) Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) and Google. CEO Babur Ozden told Reuters that he is hoping the partnership will help drive the number of its Chinese users from its current 30,000 to “millions,” in a few years time. They also hope to develop location-based services in the future. The one-year old start-up received $8 million in a second round of funding from Spanish telecom Avanzit in July. It has a total of 2 million registered users and says it adds more than 15,000 users a day. It hopes to bypass mobile operators by providing consumers mobile software directly over the Internet.
