—Zumobi releases pro football on App Store: Zumobi has launched a free Pro Football applications on the App Store that gives users access to NFL-related news, information, scores and updates from every team. The company hopes its four-tile design for the application will present advertising opportunities. The company said it’s also planning to launch more applications before the end of the year.
—Handango opens contents for Android apps: As we reported late last month, Handango is gearing up to expand its catalog of smartphone applications to include paid and free applications for the Android platform. The company has now opened the floodgates, allowing developers to begin loading their Android applications into their accounts for sale. Handango also announced that it’s sponsoring a contest for the best free and paid Android applications that will run through Nov. 7. The company is putting up a $25,000 advertising allowance each for the best free and best paid applications. The prize money can be used for email marketing, featuring products on Handango, paid keywords, online advertising, public relations and promotions with affiliates. Release.
—Qik opens up to feature phones: Qik’s mobile live streaming video service is now available in alpha on a variety of feature phones that support J2ME. A range of Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and Sony (NYSE: SNE) Ericsson (NSDQ: ERIC) cellphones are the first to be supported, but the company said it’s working to support more devices soon. Release.
—Starwood Hotels goes mobile: Starwood Hotels & Resorts has launched a new WAP site for members of its preferred guest program. The mobile site gives frequent visitors access to the chain’s various locations around the world and enables them to book reservations, manage existing reservations or contact customer service. The company plans to put some marketing behind the new site to encourage guests to book rooms from their cellphone. Usablenet (http://www.usablenet.com/), which has also built WAP sites for hotel brands like Choice Hotels, Four Seasons, Hilton, Marriott and Omni Hotels, developed the new site.
—Movaya expands catalog: Movaya, a Seattle-based content management and distribution platform, has brought more than 500 publishers and other merchants on board for its PlugNPlay and TryNBuy products. Movaya is trying to capitalize on the interest growing around application storefronts beyond the domain of carriers. Its service allows companies to build their own application stores online with billing, distribution and other tools. The bulk of Movaya’s early customers are game publishers. Release.
